If you start the world map for the first time, you have not unlocked much except the café, your garage, used car dealers and the world trails. The online mode is only available if you have completed the second championship, the Tokyo Highway Parade.

While this for those who want to get started and want to play online, it may be a little disappointment, it is better. You need to use your own cars from your own garage to participate in online races. You can not use car hire or predetermined cars as you could place on site.

Even if you unlock online racing mode, you should probably play a good part of the offline modes to earn more cars and more money. Similar to Café mode, you may need a car of a specific brand or a specific powertrain or even must be within a specific value threshold to qualify. This should ensure that no one has a better car than the competition. Imagine, you take part in a hot-hatch race while sitting in something like a Castrol Tom's Supra. That will not be fair competition at all.
